Held this year between Between Aug 25, 2018 – Sep 3, Burning Man is a festival held every year in the Black Rock Desert in the north of the state of Nevada in the United States.
The festival is named after the main event in which the burning of a human figure is made of wood. “The Tree Man” accompanies the festival from its inception and is given many different meanings by festival visitors. The fire was held on Saturday night, towards the end of the week of the festival. The festival lasts eight days, starting on the last Monday of August and ending on the American Labor Day, which falls on the first Monday of September. In the last days of the festival, some of the works of art that were presented at the festival burn, and last night they burn the festival’s temple.
As part of the festival, a temporary city called “Black Rock City” is being established, where the participants of the festival live in caravans, tents and mobile buildings. This temporary and temporary housing is an important value in the festival’s community of participants. Each year the number of participants in the festival increased and in 2010 more than 50,000 people attended the festival. The area where the festival takes place is a dried-up lake leaving behind a layer of powdery white sand called “Playa”, a Spanish beach.
The organizers of the festival are mainly concerned with logistics and basic needs: personal security, chemical services, the city structure and street signs, and the concentration of information on all activities. They also supervise art cars – cars that have been painted and decorated and are allowed to turn around in low-speed Playa.
During this week and as early as the beginning of August, a whole city is being built in a desert composed of tents, caravans, cars of all kinds, more or less heavy motorcycles and bicycles, all arranged in a circle.
In this festival there are no visitors and no tourists. All here are called participants and the main idea is: “You are here to experience, create and enjoy.” Everything is allowed, including the realization of your wildest fantasies – as long as you have not harmed the environment.
Each year, the organizers choose a central theme around which all the exhibits and works of art are assembled. Among the subjects selected in previous years were fertility, the human body, hell, space, future entities, and so forth.
The joint activities include art exhibits, environmental sculptures, music and dance stages, mass meditations, parties (mainly trance), strange costumes of all kinds, film installations and camps around various subjects. An eight-meter-long psychologist’s couch, a huge egg used for living, adults disguised as pterosaurs, a barefoot bicycle race, huge cars in the shape of a spitting dragon, or a whale-shaped form with huge fins on its roof dancing nymphs to deafening music, Snorkeling suits and snorkels dancing on the sands and sipping psychedelic wine, an alien sex pit, a man and a farm in a glass cage, aliens walking on giant crutches and a naked nude on a unicorn in glowing colors … these are just some of the things you can see and experience at the festival.
Throughout the week the statue of the giant man stands in the center of the city, staring out over the thousands of people as if watching the events around him. On the last night the performances reach their climax – with the burning man burning. The energy in the audience reaches its peak accompanied by cries, roars and bursts of emotion, each experiencing the personal revelation / enlightenment. The fire consumes the old memories and pains and the burning man’s burning symbolizes the opening of a new leaf, purification and a new beginning.
How did all this begin?
In 1986, the first festival was held at a nudist beach in San Francisco and there were 20 crazy people. In the same year, the statue was burned to a height of 3 meters. Three years later there were already 300 participants and the tower was 12 meters high. This year the name “Burning Man” was given and the festival was relocated due to police opposition to the heart of the Nevada desert, its current place, and the story of the festival was moved like a thorn, and from year to year it doubled and tripled the number of participants by 2016 Sizes from year to year ….

The trip to the desert of Nevada
A vast desert of dust in shades of yellow, gray and brown welcomes the next. The area on which the event is being built is called the Palaya, a kind of arid plain that in ancient times was a large salt lake that eventually dried up. No fossils were found in the area. The sandy soil is cracked and clear and is an amazing contrast to the dark mountain chain that surrounds it and gives the place the character of reaching another planet.
The weather is unpredictable and extreme. During the day temperatures can exceed 40 degrees in the shade and at night can be freezing.
The ten principles of the festival
Anyone may be a part of Burning Man. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community.
Burning Man is devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value.
In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation. We resist the substitution of consumption for participatory experience.
Burning Man encourages the individual to discover, exercise and rely on his or her inner resources.
Radical self-expression arises from the unique gifts of the individual. No one other than the individual or a collaborating group can determine its content. It is offered as a gift to others. In this spirit, the giver should respect the rights and liberties of the recipient.
Our community values creative cooperation and collaboration. We strive to produce, promote and protect social networks, public spaces, works of art, and methods of communication that support such interaction.
We value civil society. Community members who organize events should assume responsibility for public welfare and endeavor to communicate civic responsibilities to participants. They must also assume responsibility for conducting events in accordance with local, state and federal laws.
Leaving No Trace
Our community respects the environment. We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities wherever we gather. We clean up after ourselves and endeavor, whenever possible, to leave such places in a better state than when we found them.
Our community is committed to a radically participatory ethic. We believe that transformative change, whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the medium of deeply personal participation. We achieve being through doing. Everyone is invited to work. Everyone is invited to play. We make the world real through actions that open the heart.
Immediate experience is, in many ways, the most important touchstone of value in our culture. We seek to overcome barriers that stand between us and a recognition of our inner selves, the reality of those around us, participation in society, and contact with a natural world exceeding human powers. No idea can substitute for this experience.
The temporary city
The city is built in the form of an amphitheater where the area where the participants live is a semicircle of streets in which various exhibits are scattered, in the center of the circle the plaia, the area where large events take place.
The temple is another central building in Palaya, which was built by various artists each year and was burned the day after the burning ceremony of the wooden man. While burning wood man has the character of a pagan celebration, burning the temple is an event of sadness and separation
In the summer of 1986, Larry and his friends left for Baker Beach in San Francisco where they burned together a figure about three meters high. Later, Harvey explained the act as a spontaneous act of radical self-expression. The festival became such a few years later, when Harvey and his friends returned to Baker Beach. In 1991, the festival moved from Baker Beach to the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, because the Baker Coast did not contain the number of participants and the San Francisco municipality objected to its continued existence. Today the participants refer to the festival as the natural successor to Woodstock, with the difference being that in the burning man, participation and arrival involve difficulties arising from location and weather.

Criticism: Ideology vs. Reality
Although organizers and festival participants declare themselves opposed to material culture and commerce and advocate the idea of unlimited sharing, in recent years a limited number of tickets have been sold. This causes not all interested parties to participate, whether because of ticket prices (price around $ 420, price profiteers – up to $ 1,200) or because of the numerical restriction.
In anticipation of the festival in 2012 began to be sold tickets through the lottery system. As a result, there was a demand for three times the amount of tickets offered. The following year the lottery was canceled.
In the bottom line, any attempt to explain to anyone who has not yet been at the festival what the burning man festival is, is like explaining to someone who has not yet been in the ocean how the sea smells, how the feet touch the beach and how it feels at sea. In short – until you experience it, you will not understand…
Here’s a selection of some of the views of the festival various people have shared with us:
